Harvard works because we do! The Harvard Union of Clerical and Technical Workers is 4600+ Harvard employees of diverse ages, backgrounds, talents, and opinions. It was voted in on May 17th, 1988 and is now a strong, innovative local union affiliated with AFSCME, a national union representing mostly public employees. Most overtime-eligible (‘non-exempt’) Harvard Staff who are not part of one of the service worker or specialized trade unions are included in our bargaining unit and are eligible to become Union members.

We are proud and happy to announce that HUCTW and the University have initialed a Tentative Agreement, bringing our protracted and difficult 2012 contract negotiations to a successful close.

The Tentative Agreement will not be finalized and implemented until it is voted on and ratified by the members of HUCTW.  Very shortly you will hear about details for a lunchtime meeting in your part of the campus, and you will receive a detailed, written summary of the settlement, including all specifics on the pay program, a salary calculator that allows you to figure out your exact increase, and new contract language.  The date for ratification voting is Tuesday, April 2. You must bring your Harvard ID or another photo ID to vote. Please click on the following link to find a convenient voting time and location near you:

Our current struggle is about preserving a middle-class living standard for the University’s talented and hard-working support staff. As the University recovers and we see signs of growth and optimism across the campus every day, it is critically important for Harvard to invest in the solid pay increases and affordable health care that will build and maintain a stable, high-quality working community.
  • There is a troubling discrepancy between Harvard’s conservative economic proposals in negotiations and the significant expansion being carried out across the University.

  • Staff salaries, held back for two years with increases that have scarcely kept up with inflation, need to begin growing again as Harvard enters a period of exciting new development.

  • Harvard has the resources to develop innovative, progressive solutions to the problem of health care cost -- following in the footsteps of ivy league peers and many forward-thinking businesses. Instead, management representatives are narrowly focused on changes that simply shift more costs onto employees.
Our members are deeply loyal to the University’s mission and to their work with the Harvard community, and everything we do as a Union reflects that commitment.
